ABOUT THE CLASS
A screenplay can become frightening when we look at the whole thing at once Ninety pages. Three acts. Character arcs. Dialogue. Structure. Theme. It quickly becomes one enormous object sitting on the desk, waiting to be solved.
My way into screenwriting is smaller: write one scene.
The class begins with a very simple situation: a person crossing a street.
From that starting point, we explore character, setting, action and intention. Who is this person? Where are they going? What do they want? What is visible, and what is being concealed? A small physical action begins to reveal a larger story.
We then develop the scene through several drafts. You will learn how to move from an idea and bullet points into dramatic structure, how to shape a beginning, middle and end, and how to use background action, pacing and visual information.
We also look at screenplay formatting—not as a set of rules designed to intimidate you, but as a practical language shared by writers, actors and the production team. Clear formatting helps everyone see the same potential film.
FINDING YOUR OWN WRITING PROCESS
I have completed more than thirty feature-length screenplays, but I still have to find my way into every new story. Experience does not remove uncertainty. It gives you tools for working with it.
Throughout the class, I share the tools I use to prepare a scene, explore theme, write dialogue, reveal and conceal information and control rhythm on the page. Just as importantly, I encourage you to notice your own process. Teaching writing is not only about telling you what to do. It is about creating the conditions in which you can teach yourself.
YOUR CLASS PROJECT
Your project is to write one complete scene in screenplay format. That scene does not have to carry an entire film. It only needs to be alive. Give a character a need, place an obstacle in the way and let the scene move. By completing one scene carefully, you will understand far more than you would by endlessly planning a screenplay you never begin.
I am available in the YouTube comments for your filmmaking questions—not only questions about this class, but also questions about your own screenplay or creative process.
Bring a pen, paper and your imagination. One scene is enough to begin.
